About
Dr. Kawthar Abla, Ph.D., is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Beirut Arab University (BAU), Lebanon, where she combines academic teaching, pharmaceutical research, and scientific innovation. She is the principal investigator of the Nanotechnology Research Laboratory at BAU, with a research program focused on developing, optimizing, and biologically evaluating advanced drug delivery systems and pharmaceutical nanocarriers.
Dr. Abla holds a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Science and has developed extensive expertise in pharmaceutical nanotechnology, particularly lipid-based nanocarriers, liposomes, nanoemulsions, microemulsions, nanostructured systems, and targeted drug delivery. Her research interests include designing innovative delivery platforms for challenging therapeutic areas, including cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and diseases requiring targeted or non-invasive drug delivery. Her work integrates formulation development, mathematical optimization, physicochemical characterization, in vitro and in vivo evaluation, pharmacokinetics, biodistribution, and biomimetic models.
Alongside her research activities, Dr. Abla is actively involved in pharmacy education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. At Beirut Arab University, she currently teaches Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms I (PHAR 271), Physical Pharmacy and Drug Stability (PHAR 281), Manufacturing (PHAR 470), Research Methodologies and Bioethics (PHGC 703), and Pharmaceutical Technology (PHIPP 711). Her teaching responsibilities span fundamental pharmaceutical sciences, formulation and manufacturing, pharmaceutical technology, research methodology, and research ethics.
She has also served as a laboratory instructor for Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms I, Physical Pharmacy and Drug Stability, Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics, and Manufacturing, providing students with hands-on training in pharmaceutical formulation, characterization, and experimental techniques.
Her commitment to education extends beyond the Faculty of Pharmacy. Dr. Abla has delivered invited postgraduate lectures in the Biomedical Engineering Program at the American University of Beirut, covering topics such as drug delivery, tissue engineering, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics.
Dr. Abla has published more than 15 peer-reviewed articles, predominantly in high-impact Q1 journals, and has contributed to nanomedicine, drug delivery, biomaterials, and pharmaceutical technology. Competitive grants and collaborations with national and international academic institutions have supported her research. She is also actively engaged in research supervision, scientific reviewing, university research activities, and academic service.
In recognition of her research contributions, Dr. Abla has received several distinctions, including research and women researcher awards, as well as competitive research funding. Her academic profile reflects a strong integration of research, teaching, mentorship, and scientific innovation, with a particular commitment to developing next-generation pharmaceutical technologies and training future pharmacists and researchers.
