Biography
Dr. Youmn Al Rawi is an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at Beirut Arab University. I have a PhD in Structural Engineering from BAU, a Master’s in Engineering Management from the American University of Beirut, and a Diploma in Civil Engineering from the Lebanese University. I have been teaching courses since 2008 such as reinforced concrete, foundation and earthquake design, project management and graduate level structural dynamics and numerical modeling. I also have over 18 years experience as a structural engineer and project planner for projects in Lebanon, UAE and Qatar. My target is to translate theory into real design and construction practice.
Research Interests
My research interests are in the behavior of concrete structures under impact and dynamic loading, particularly prestressed and post-tensioned slabs and beams. My research interests include seismic and wind performance of high-rise buildings and the efficiency of different lateral load resisting systems. My work uses experimental testing coupled with finite element modeling to understand structural response and aid safer, more resilient design.
Education & Qualifications
PhD in Structural Engineering, Beirut Arab University, Lebanon (2015–2020)
Thesis: Effect of Impact Loading on the Behavior of Post-Tensioned Concrete Slabs
Master’s in Engineering Management, American University of Beirut, Lebanon (2008–2010)
Concentration in construction management of large-scale projects
Diploma in Civil Engineering, Lebanese University – Branch I, Tripoli (2001–2006)
Final project: seismic and wind analysis of the 72-story Yacoub Tower, Dubai

Teaching Areas
I teach undergraduate and graduate courses in structural and construction engineering. At the undergraduate level, my courses include Reinforced Concrete I, II, and III, Earthquake Design, and Construction Project Management. At the graduate level, I teach Dynamic and Seismic Analysis of Structures, Numerical Modeling of Concrete Structures, and Computer Analysis of Structures. I also supervise final-year projects, particularly the analysis and design of tall tall buildings using ETABS.
