On Friday, February 28, 2025, the Faculty of Pharmacy at BAU, in collaboration with Hammoud Hospital University Medical Center (HHUMC), conducted an awareness campaign to educate Muslim patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus on the safe use of glucose-lowering agents during Ramadan fasting.

Under the guidance of Dr. Soha Hnaineh, Chief Pharmacist at HHUMC, and Dr. Khouloud Housary, clinical preceptor at the Pharmacy Practice Department, senior BAU pharmacy students collaborated with endocrinologists, medical residents, nurses, and dieticians from HHUMC to provide evidence-based education and patient-centered services. The event was overseen by Dr. Rania Itani, Pharmacy Practice Experience V/VI Coordinator, who ensured the active participation of pharmacy students in the campaign as part of their clinical training, and Dr. Rawad Hayouk, Clinical Lecturer at the Faculty of Pharmacy, who provided guidance on clinical aspects of diabetes care.

The campaign featured key interventions including blood glucose screening to assess glycemic control and risk assessment to determine patients’ eligibility for safe fasting. It also included personalized medication adjustments to optimize therapy and minimize complications, along with non-pharmacological and dietary recommendations for Suhoor and Iftar to ensure balanced nutrition and stable blood sugar levels.

This initiative effectively raised awareness, improved patient confidence, and strengthened interprofessional collaboration to enhance diabetes care. Participants expressed high satisfaction with the campaign, emphasizing its positive impact in promoting safe and informed fasting practices during Ramadan.
