Applying International Standards in Student Assessment: The Faculty of Pharmacy Starts OSCE for Third Level Students

13 May 2015

On 13 May 2015, third level pharmacy students were examined using Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) at the end of the spring semester.

The aim of introducing OSCE as a method of assessment in the curriculum of the pharmacy practice department was to ensure that our students are meeting the clinical and professional competencies required by the international standards of professional pharmacy practice.

Eighty-five third level students were assessed by carefully designed four stations. Each station was designed to test specific competencies at a certain level. The four stations composed of three non-interactive stations and one interactive station.

‘I really enjoyed being an assessor in OSCE. The flow of students through stations was smooth and highly organized. The students were professional in attitude and had good communication skills. I am very proud that our efforts during the semesters were not wasted and that our future pharmacists will reflect the bright image of their Faculty’ quoted Dr. Deema Rahme.

‘The OSCE was a totally new experience to me. I felt that I was in a real-life practice situation where I was responsible to deal professionally with the patient, address his concerns and solve his drug therapy related problem. It was very challenging yet I guess it brought out the best of me.’ quoted Samer Jallad, a third level student.
