The Physical Therapy Department at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Beirut Arab University (BAU), hosted a two-day training titled “Early Rehabilitation in Emergency of Persons with Lower Limb Amputation” on 6–7 October 2026 at the Beirut campus. The training was organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in collaboration with the Lebanese Order of Physiotherapists (LOPT).

Prof. Ibtissam Saab, Head of the Physical Therapy Department, welcomed the participants and officially opened the training. She highlighted the vital role of physiotherapists throughout the continuum of care in emergency settings and reaffirmed BAU’s commitment to partnerships that strengthen national rehabilitation capacity.

Delivered by international ICRC trainers, the training brought together 15 physiotherapists, including 13 practitioners from across Lebanon working in ICRC-affiliated rehabilitation centres, as well as two members of BAU’s Physical Therapy Department, Dr. Hussein Abou Yassine and Dr. Nadine Assaad.

The programme combined theoretical sessions with hands-on practical training, covering key aspects of emergency rehabilitation, including:

• Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) response and the role of physiotherapists in emergency medical teams.

• Epidemiology, types, and surgical management of lower limb amputations.

• Acute post-operative care, including wound management, edema control, positioning, and pain management.

• Early post-amputation assessment, treatment planning, discharge planning, and referral.

• Psychosocial support and communication with patients coping with trauma- and conflict-related amputations.

• Prosthetic components and pre-prosthetic preparation.

• Post-fitting rehabilitation and disability inclusion throughout all stages of emergency response.
