Abstract
The use of mild steel as construction material in industrial sectors has become a great challenge for corrosion engineers or scientists nowadays. In practice, most of the acidic industrial applications such as refining crude oil, acid pickling, industrial cleaning, acid descaling, oil–well acid in oil recovery and petrochemical processes use mild steel as their material. Corrosion is a costly problem that results to economic waste when referring to cost of design, manufacturing, construction and management. The use of inhibitors is one of the most practical methods for protection metal against corrosion, especially in acidic media. Acidic media, hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sulphuric acid (H2SO4) are often used as industrial acid cleaners and pickling acids. Large numbers of organic compounds revealed that N, S and O containing organic compounds acted as promising inhibitors. However, most of these compounds are not only expensive, but also toxic to living beings. It is needless to point out the importance of cheap and safe inhibitors for corrosion of mild steel. Therefore, research is now geared towards using plant extract as corrosion inhibitors because they are non toxic, environmental friendly, easily biodegradable and renewable. Literature shows a growing trend in the use of natural products known as non-toxic compounds, called also green inhibitors, as corrosion inhibitors. In our research several plants that cultivated in Lebanon were selected to be tested as corrosion inhibitors for steel to replace toxic chemicals extensively used in industrial acid and cleaning systems. Bitter orange, Citrus Aurantium (CA); Sumac, Rhus Coriaria (RC); Loquat, Erio botrya (EB); Apple, Malus domestica (MD), Apricot, Prunus armeniaca (PA) ; and Bonduc nut, Caesalpinia bonducella (CB) leaf were taken from different regions in Lebanon.Plant leaf extract, extracted using simple chemical techniques in the lab proved to be good green corrosion inhibitors. It is important to shed the light on the fact that by using plant of natural origin which is safe, friendly, and biodegradable we are also creating a new research in Lebanon in the field of corrosion protection which will open the field for many students and researchers to go further which is the valuable goal of our project.
