Abstract
Assessment of student learning outcomes is the standard in most universities for monitoring the educational process. Usually programs in universities rely on the results of such assessments to recommend changes and resolve any issues related to courses and their associated learning outcomes. The assessment process, when done manually, is prone to many mistakes and is time consuming. This is why the decisions made based on such assessments are not trusted and not effective. In this thesis we describe an assessment approach that can be applied on a large number of educational programs. Moreover, a flexible and generic tool is designed and implemented to automate the assessment process, namely, the Customizable Course Assessment Tool (CCAT). This tool can be customized for many academic programs in different disciplines. It simplifies the assessment process for the instructors and accreditation officers. It also generates course assessment reports that are mandatory for the continuous improvement process needed for the accreditation. These reports display the students’ achievement for required outcomes in each course. Moreover, a semi-automatic deductive system is implemented on this tool in order to help in generating recommendations based on the assessments for the Computer Science program at Beirut Arab University. This deductive system is based on a dynamic knowledge base that can be updated or modified whenever needed. Finally, in order to validate the efficiency, effectiveness and satisfaction of the CCAT tool, a usability study is conducted on some of the accreditation officers at Beirut Arab University. The results showed that CCAT is a viable tool that streamlines the course assessment process.
