Research Innovation at Beirut Arab University Granted Patent in Dentistry

05 October 2026

A research team from the Faculty of Science at Beirut Arab University has achieved a new scientific milestone by receiving a patent from the Lebanese Ministry of Economy and Trade. The patent recognizes the development of an innovative technique designed for advanced dental applications, utilizing natural, eco-friendly materials to enhance the efficacy and lifespan of dental restorations.

This achievement is the result of collaborative research efforts by a team of BAU scientists: Professor Ghassan Younes, Professor Mohamad Al-Dakdouki, Dr. Rana El-Hajj, and Ms. Hiba-Allah Nahhas. The researchers developed a green synthesis technology to sustainably produce advanced zinc oxide nanoparticles.

The team utilized locally available plant extracts to synthesize these nanomaterials, moving away from conventional methods that rely on potentially harmful chemicals and high energy consumption. This approach aligns the innovation closely with environmental sustainability standards.

Scientific testing demonstrated that integrating these green nanoparticles into dental cement and polymer formulations including temporary fillings, root canal sealers, and restorative composite materials enhances their antimicrobial properties, improves overall material performance, and extends their durability.

Furthermore, the invention offers advanced solutions to key clinical challenges by providing formulations that can be monitored via standard X-ray imaging without the need for heavy metals, while also improving the compatibility, stability, and mechanical strength of materials used in restorative dentistry.

A key advantage of this innovation is its simple, scalable, and cost-effective production process relying on local resources. This marks a significant step toward promoting sustainability, supporting self-sufficiency within the dental sector, and reducing dependence on imported materials.

This milestone highlights the scientific advancement of the research team and demonstrates the capacity of Lebanese academic talent to develop innovative solutions that bridge scientific research and modern medical applications, despite current economic and industrial challenges.
