Abstract

Medical errors are considered a common cause of patient mortality and morbidity despite all the efforts to improve patient safety. Physicians who have made medical errors may also experience harm afterward, which negatively affects their career and personal life. Not only can support be provided to these physicians, but also educating them to disclose their errors and implementing coping strategies can help decrease the negative impacts experienced. Second victims are health-care professionals who become distressed after encountering a patient-safety incident, an unintended event that could have resulted or has resulted in harm to a patient. The negative effects experienced following an error include physical symptoms (mainly fatigue, sleep disturbance, and tachycardia) and psychosocial symptoms (such as depression, frustration, and difficulty concentrating).
