Abstract
This study aimed at exploring the relationship between Internet Addiction (IA), variables of personality (self-esteem), mental disorders (OCD, insomnia), religiosity, and well-being, in a sample of students at Beirut Arab University (n=229). The findings show that gender differences are statistically insignificant in all variables, while IA correlated significantly with insomnia and OCD in both sexes. In the female sample, IA correlated negatively with the following variables: self-esteem, self-reported physical and mental health, and satisfaction with life. Mutual correlation coefficients were analyzed through basic components, and three factors were extracted from the sample. These were called: Well-being, IA and mental disorder, and religiosity. On the other hand, four factors were extracted from the female sample, and were called: well-being vs. insomnia and OCD, IA and mental disorders, religiosity, and IA vs. self-esteem. The study concluded that IA is related to mental disorder indicators and may harm well-being. The study, thus, recommends that it is necessary to provide preventive programs to reduce internet use.
