The Human Rights Center at Beirut Arab University in collaboration with the Academic University College for Non-Violence and Human Rights (AUNHOR), organized an academic session on “The Path to Abolishing the Death Penalty in Lebanon and Worldwide”, in commemoration of World Day against the Death Penalty.
The session was moderated by Dr. Ali Mourad, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law and Political Science at Beirut Arab University, and featured Dr. Ogarit Younan, Founder of AUNOHR and laureate of the Gandhi International Award (2022), and Mr. Rafik Zakharia, legal expert and appellate lawyer. Their interventions addressed the history of the death penalty in Lebanon and in different countries, highlighting the achievements of the National Campaign to Abolish the Death Penalty and its role in advancing legal and human rights reforms.
An engaging open dialogue followed, addressing concepts such as justice, deterrence, crime, and the rights of suspects, while emphasizing the importance of awareness and education in promoting human rights.
