Abstract
Due to their high structural efficiency, high strength-to-self weight ratio, low cost, speed and flexibility of construction, durability and high levels of performance in terms of ductility and dissipation energy, steel structures had become a major consideration in the seismic design of high rise buildings nowadays. The aim of this research is to evaluate how certain factors such as column dimensions and applied axial loads can influence the behavior of steel beam-column connections subjected to seismic loads. Numerical analyses using the finite element software "ANSYS" is used to investigate these behaviors. Three beam-column steel rigid connections with variable column dimensions and applied axial loads are developed using ANSYS software. Different seismic load levels are imposed at the connections with constant axial load applied on the columns. A comparison between the seismic behaviors of all connections regarding strength, stiffness and energy dissipation will be presented.
