Course Description

The course is designed to introduce students to the essential therapeutic knowledge, principles and concepts needed for providing pharmaceutical care to patients with the following infectious diseases: central nervous system infections, upper respiratory tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, skin and soft-tissue infections, tuberculosis, endocarditis, intra-abdominal infections, urinary tract infections, prostatitis, sexually transmitted diseases, sepsis and septic shock, surgical prophylaxis, superficial fungal infections, invasive fungal infections, viral infections, HIV infection, and parasitic diseases. Emphasis will be placed on integrating epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, treatment options and guidelines, disease state management including the rationale of drug therapy selection, as well as addressing drug therapy related problems for the above mentioned disorders. To apply the acquired knowledge and skills, the course is co-requisite to Integrated Case-Based Learning III, PHAR 476, which enables the provision of patient-centered care.
