Course Description
Structural Semantics, Lexical Semantics, Prototype Semantics. How and what words of a language denote (things in the world—concepts)---the meaning of words---theories of classification and decomposition of word meaning---the relationship of word meaning to sentence meaning and syntax. A number of discourse approaches to analyzing naturally occurring language use such as talk-in-interaction, the various dimensions of discourse ( intonation, gesture, syntax, lexis, speech acts, moves, turns, strategies), genres of discourse ( the media, politics, education, business etc), discourse and sentence syntax, discourse and interaction, discourse and power, CDA, ethnography of communication functional grammar.
