Course Description
This course aims to develop student teachers Disciplinary Literacy skills in numeracy for elementary education, build a strong foundation in mathematical concepts for children and in using numbers effectively in their real daily life situations. They will be trained in how to use specialized knowledge and abilities to develop children’s disciplinary habits of mind in reading, writing, thinking and communicating like a mathematician. Specialized texts with vocabulary including words that have different meanings in mathematics than in everyday use, forms of writing interpreting calculus word problems, symbols and Greek alphabet letters that represent math concepts, patterns and relationships, measurements, and modes of inquiry that experts use in mathematics will be analyzed. Concepts of data and graphing to enable children to understand information visually, and basic concepts related to financial literacy such as money, counting coins, making change, and understanding simple budgeting will equally be explored.
