Course Description
This course help student teachers develop a solid understanding of measurement and geometry as an essential component of the elementary mathematics curriculum. This course focuses on equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and pedagogical approaches needed to effectively teach these concepts to young learners. The course covers the fundamentals of measurement such as length, weight, volume, time, and temperature, the common measurement tools such as rulers, scales, measuring cups, etc. and techniques to measure real objects, basic geometric shapes and properties, the relationship between 2D shapes and 3D objects, including surface area and volume. Visual aids, hands-on activities, and technology are integrated to enhance student teachers’ skills of developing children’s spatial reasoning skills and enrich their abilities to visualize, describe, and manipulate objects in space, and understand symmetry, congruence, and transformations (translations, rotations, and reflections). The relevance of measurement and geometry in everyday life and various fields, such as art, architecture, and science is emphasized.
