Course Description
This course offers a survey of Modernist drama and dramatic theory as represented by Wilde, Shaw, Yeats, Eliot, Auden, and Beckett, possibly with side-glances at Strindberg, Pirandello, Cocteau, Brecht, and others. Then it gives an in-depth look at the three most influential contemporary British playwrights: Stoppard, Churchill, and Ayckbourn. Readings include generous selections of each author’s plays. Emphasis is on recurring themes that haunt these authors’ works and the innovative techniques they develop to convey them. Texts may vary from year to year according to instructor.
