Course Description

This course aims to develop student teachers Disciplinary Literacy skills in history for elementary education to build a strong foundation in historic concepts for children and in using these concepts effectively in children’s real daily life situations. They will be trained on how to use specialized historic knowledge and abilities to develop children’s disciplinary habits of mind in reading, writing, thinking and communicating. They will investigate how to apply historical reasoning, critical thinking and contextual understanding strategies to analyze historical documents, interpret primary and secondary sources, evaluate the credibility of different sources of information, use the past as a prelude to the future, attending to bias and perspective, and construct evidence-based accounts of probable historical events a like a historian does.
