Course Description
This course aims to develop student teachers Disciplinary Literacy skills in geography for elementary education to build a strong foundation in geographic concepts for children, in using these concepts effectively in children’s real daily life situations and understand the world in which they live. They will be trained on how to use specialized scientific knowledge and abilities to develop children’s disciplinary habits of mind in reading, writing, thinking and communicating. They will investigate how to involve Geographic Inquiry Skills to equip children with the ability to ask geographic questions, gather data, analyze spatial relationships, and draw conclusions based on evidence, Cultural Awareness by exploring the diversity of cultures, languages, religions, and traditions around the world, Environmental Stewardship to Foster a sense of responsibility toward the environment and exploring topics like sustainable practices, conservation, and the impact of human activities on ecosystems, Spatial Thinking to enable children to interpret and create maps, understand geographic scale, and analyze spatial patterns, Geographic Data Interpretation such as population trends, land use patterns, and economic indicators, to make informed decisions, and Critical Analysis to critically evaluate the ways in which geography influences social, political, and economic processes.
