Course Description
This course is designed to provide student teachers with a comprehensive understanding of the essential mathematical concepts that form the foundation of the K-6 curriculum. Emphasizing both content knowledge and pedagogical strategies, the course equips student teachers with the skills to effectively teach mathematics to young learners. The course covers the number concepts to help the understanding of whole numbers, integers, rational numbers, and their relationships. It explores basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and their application in problem-solving and algebraic reasoning. It introduces student teachers to geometric shapes, measurement techniques, and the spatial relationships between objects. Student teachers will explore the basics of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data, as well as understanding fundamental concepts in probability. They will be trained on the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills through inquiry-based approaches.
