The course aims at explaining the theories of discourse and demonstrating their practical relevance to fields such as teaching variation in language and literary stylistics. It treats the relation between form and function, discourse structure, exchange structure, speech act theory, conversational maxims, conversation analysis, discourse as dialogue, information structure, meaning and context, discourse and cultural aspects, coherence, grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion.
