Reclaimed Architecture: Traditional Crafts and Zero Waste in the Digital Era
Abstract
The relentless expansion of urban centers has exacerbated
resource allocation disparities, widened socioeconomic gaps, and
intensified environmental degradation. This research investigates the
transformative potential of reclaimed architecture—a model that
integrates traditional crafts with zero-waste principles—to foster
sustainable and inclusive urban development. By strategically
utilizing readily available and underutilized resources, reclaimed
architecture empowers local communities, creates employment
opportunities, and reduces reliance on costly imported materials,
thereby promoting economic inclusivity and community
empowerment. This study focuses on a specific case study within
intersection of old city and new city of Sidon (south Lebanon),
utilizing a mixed-methods research methodology that combines both
descriptive and evaluative techniques. This is followed by material
testing, prototype development, and community engagement, which
collectively assess the feasibility and impact of reclaimed materials in
diverse architectural applications. The study’s findings aim to provide
a framework for integrating reclaimed architecture into urban
development practices. This framework will be supported by a proof
of concept, a digital twin, to validate the proposed approach and
demonstrate its applicability in real-world scenarios. The outcomes
will offer valuable insights into how reclaimed architecture can
minimize construction waste, conserve natural resources, and serve as
a catalyst for more equitable and resilient urban development,
preserving cultural heritage while fostering sustainable growth.
