Associate Professor


Dr. Hassan Assoum is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Beirut Arab University. Previously, he was lecturer of Mechanical Engineering at La Rochelle University in France. He received his Ph.D. from University of La Rochelle in 2013, his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from University of Technology of Compiegne in 2010 and his B.S. in Technology from the college of Raoul Follereau, Belfort-France in 2007.

Dr. Assoum's current fields of research focus on experimental investigation of impinging jet, aeroacoustics and noise control in residential buildings.
Dr. Assoum has published several scientific journal papers and international conference papers (about 25 papers in total). 

Dr. Assoum worked also at PSA Peugeot Citroen, Solideal France and Laboratory of Fluid Dynamics at the Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal.

Teaching

  • Pump Technology : Pump classifications. Centrifugal pump construction. Pump performance curves, operating points, discharge regulation, similarity, speed variation, and cavitation. Pumps in series and parallel. Multi-stage pumps, axial flow pumps, Kaplan pumps. Pump applications and introduction to pump station design and cavitation in pumps.
  • Fluid System Design : Piping system calculations. Pipe network systems. Water hammer protection cause effect & solution. Application of fluid thermal (space air heating application) such as radiator systems including pipe sizing and selection of boiler, pump, and radiators.
  • Hydraulics machinery : Pelton wheel, Francis, propeller and Kaplan turbines, construction, design factors, discharge regulation and part load performance, model testing, cavitations and turbine selection, hydropower plants, types, capacity, number of units, pump storage.
  • Fluid Dynamics : Fluid static, Forces on immersed surfaces, buoyancy and stability of floating bodies, fluid masses subjected to acceleration, vortex motion. Basic fluid dynamic equation, Continuity equation, Bernoulli's equation. Fluid flow in pipelines, pipe losses, major and minor losses calculation, series and parallel pipes. Fluid flow kinematics for three- dimensional fluid motions, velocity potential, Basic and combined flow field applications. Lift and Drag forces. Navier-Stokes equations.
  • Dynamics : Dynamics of a particle, system of particles, and planar rigid bodies using Newton’s law of motion,work and energy principle, and impulse and momentum principle. Free-body diagram and concept of equilibrium. Inertia properties of rigid bodies.

  • Advanced data post-processing techniques: Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD), Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD), Finite-Time-Lyapunov-Exponent (FTLE).

  • Heat and mass transfer measurements using electrochemical method.
