Undergraduate
Program
Beirut
Arab University (BAU) is a private institution of higher learning
founded in 1960. The university is academically affiliated to Alexandria
University, Alexandria, Egypt. The university is co-educational and
women are admitted to all faculties.The main objective of the university
is to share in the education of the Lebanese youth as well as those from
the different Arab Countries, and in the advancement of knowledge.
In
1977 the university recognized the need for Sciences education and
established the Faculty of Sciences. The first Physics class graduated
from the Faculty on June 1980, Mathematics class on June
1982, Chemistry class on June 1992 and the first Computer Sciences class
will graduate on June 2000. The academic degrees are awarded by
Alexandria University upon the recommendation of the board of Beirut
Arab University.
A
new branch of Biology and Environmental Studies commenced in the
academic year 1998-1999, first class is expected to graduate by June
2002.
The
objective of the Faculty of Sciences is to provide its students with
modern high standard education. A proper balance between theoretical
courses and applied work is well established to provide the
graduate with the knowledge to pursue a professional career or for
graduate study and continuing education. The undergraduate curricula is
adapted to the particular needs and problems of Lebanon and the Arab
Countries, and in the same time keeps up with the latest development in
the particular field of study.
The Faculty of Sciences offers programs extending over four
academic years, leading to the degree of Bachelor of Sciences
(B.Sc.). Each academic year is divided into two terms (fall and spring)
of 14 weeks each.
Undergraduate
Admission
Students
must hold a high school certificate from Lebanese Government
Mathematics section, Experimental sciences or an equivalent high school
certificate accepted by the Lebanese Government. In pursuit of selecting
the best-qualified candidates, students must obtain a high grade on the
entrance examination. Entrance examinations are held in the English
language. Students must fulfill all the requirements and comply
with the rules of the University. Full-time study is required by all the
Faculty of Sciences students.

following rules and regulations apply to all the undergraduate programs
of the Faculty of Sciences.

A
student obtaining less than 30% in the written final examination of
a course will have a failing grade not more than 58% even if the
student has a high mark in the year work.
A
student will not sit for the final examination of a course if
his/her attendance during the term in a course is less than 75%. A
student will have a failing grade.
The
total grade of the whole academic year follows the above system
applied to the total sum of the marks of all the courses given in
the two terms of that academic year.
The
students graduation grade follows the above system of the passing
grades calculated according to the total sum of the marks obtained
in each year of the five years of studies. This will take effect
starting 1997 - 1998 graduating class.
A
student is promoted to a higher class if he/she has obtained a
passing grade in all the courses of the class he/she is registered
in.
A
student is promoted to a higher class if he/she has a failing grade
in no more than the equivalence of 9 credit hours or 450 marks from
class he/she is registered in and/or from previous classes.
A
student who is promoted to a higher class carrying failing courses
from previous classes will sit for the final examination in these
courses when they will be offered in the following academic year.
Final
academic class students who have failed in one or two courses can
repeat the final examination offered specially for them during the
first week before the start of the following academic year.
The
highest mark a student can get in a repeated course is 69%.
A
student who repeats a course because he/she was absent in the final
examination of the course due to reasons approved by the
Faculty Council will not get a fail grade and will get the actual
mark obtained in the repeated final examination.
A
student who has failed in more than the equivalence of 9 credit
hours or 450 marks from the current and previous academic years must
repeat.
Registration
is cancelled for repeat students of the first year who fail to be
promoted to the second year twice. Students are not allowed to
repeat other academic classes (except the final and pre-final
academic classes) more than three times. Repeat students of final
and pre-final academic classes are not allowed to stay in each class
more than four years. Repeat students of the final academic class
are given an additional two years if he/she fails in less than half
of the academic courses of the final class apart from the courses
they carry from previous academic classes. These students may apply
for a petition to be given an exceptional chance for examination in
the courses in which he/she has failed. The acceptance of this
petition is pending University Board decision after having been
approved by the Academic Committee in compliance with the Faculty
Council.
For
the registration of a student in an academic year, the complete
tuition fees for that year must be fully paid.
A
student may interrupt his study not more than three years of
absence. In such case he/she can reregister again in the class at
which interruption has occurred. A student who has been absent for
more than three years may be given an exceptional chance for
re-registration pending University Board decision based on a
proposal admitted by the Academic Committee on the student's
petition.
Candidates
transferring from recognized institutions of higher education are
eligible for consideration for admission to the second or third
class only. They should fulfill the concerned department
requirements.
