Beirut Arab University in its unique position among the leading universities in Lebanon, strives to make major contributions towards the advancement scientific research, development and build-up of a knowledge based society and economy in Lebanon. In line with this vision the Research Center for Environment and Development (RCED) at BAU was established in the beginning of the academic year 2011- 2012 at the heart of the Bekaa Valley. RCED is envisaged as a platform to address aspects and tackle problems in the realm of "interdependent pillars” of sustainable development identified by United Nation as economic development, social development, and environmental protection. Its purpose to study challenges facing these components and seek ways means to effectively contribute to sustainability in all human activities in the country. The ecological approach utilized by RCED treats the social, biological and physical components as primary determinants of environmental protection which a key goal of development.
