The faculty offers a Bachelor degree in Medicine and Surgery. It includes the following academic and clinical departments:

  The duration of study is six years followed by a year of training (internship) in a hospital under the supervision of faculty staff  members.

Master degrees

The faculty offers Master degrees in the specializations of its departments, in addition to the following:

Applicants for a Master degree must:

hold a Bachelor degree with an average grade “Good”

be full time students for at least one academic year.

submit a written thesis within at least two years of    registration.

MD Degrees:

BAU offers MD degrees in the specializations of the Master's program in addition to the following:

 Applicants for an MD must:

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM

Beirut Arab University (BAU) is a private institution of higher learning founded in 1960. The university is academically affiliated to Alexandria University, Alexandria, Egypt. The university is co-educational and women are admitted to all faculties.The main objective of the university is to share in the education of the Lebanese youth as well as those from the different Arab Countries, and in the advancement of knowledge.

In 1996 the university recognized the need for Medical education and established the Faculty of  Medicine. The first class will graduate from the Faculty in June 2001. The academic degrees are awarded by Alexandria University upon the recommendation of the board of Beirut Arab University. The Faculty of Medicine graduates will hold a M.B.B.Ch. degree.

 The objectives of the undergraduate level are carried out by applying an educational philosophy that is based on the following principles:

1- Education is a life-long process.

2- An individual is capable of educating him/herself through consulting sources of knowledge and synthesis them.

3- A staff member does not simply pass on information and skills. He/She is a guide who leads students to sources of knowledge, acts as a role model, and helps them with their problems, relying on his / her experience in accordance with ethics of leadership.

The duration study to obtain the Bachelor's degree in Medicine and Surgery is six years, followed by one year of Internship under the supervision of the Faculty.

The language of instruction is English.

The years of study to obtain the Bachelor's degree in Medicine and Surgery are divided into the following three stages:

1- The first stage (Basic Medical Sciences) includes the first and second years.

2- The second stage (Intermediate) includes the third year .

3- The third stage (Clinical) includes the fourth , fifth and sixth years.

Each of these three stages is treated as a single entity .

Clinical study includes courses in: internal medicine, general and special surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, E.N.T., anesthesia, pediatrics, dermatology, radiology, forensic medicine and toxicology, and community medicine.

Graduates are qualified for the Licensing Examination in Lebanon (Collocium).

The faculty of Medicine offers postgraduate studies in different areas of medicine for graduates from BAU and other universities in Lebanon.

UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSION

Students must hold a high school certificate from Lebanese Government  Mathematics section, Experimental sciences or an equivalent high school certificate accepted by the Lebanese Government. In pursue of selecting the best qualified candidates students must obtain a high grade in the entrance examination. Entrance examinations held in the subjects of  Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English language.  Students must fulfill all the requirements and comply with the rules of the University. Full-time study is required by all the Faculty of Medicine students

ACADEMIC RULES AND REGULATIONS

The following rules and regulations apply to all the undergraduate programs of the Faculty of Medicine.

  1. All final course grades are given according to the following system:

    Passing Grades

    90% - 100%

    Excellent

    80% - 89%

    Very Good

    70% - 79%

    Good

    60% - 69%

    Pass

    Failing Grades

    50% - 59%

    Weak

    Less than 50%

    Very Weak

  2. A student will not sit for the final examination of a course if his/her attendance during the term in a course is less than 90%. A student will have a failing grade.
  3. A student is promoted to a higher class if he/she has obtained a passing grade in all the courses of the class he/she is registered in.
  4. A make up exam is held for all students in September. If the student fail to pass the make up exam, he/she will not be promoted to a higher class if he is in the second or third year.
  5. The highest mark a student can get in a repeated course is 69%.
  6. A student obtaining less than 35% in the written final examination of a course will have a failing grade not more than 58% even if the student has a high mark in the year work.
  7. The students graduation grade follows the above system of the passing grades calculated according to the total sum of the marks obtained in each year of the sixth years of studies.
  8. A student who repeats a course because he/she was absent in the final examination of the course due to reasons approved by the Faculty Council will not get a fail grade and will get the actual mark obtained in the repeated final examination.
  9. For the registration of a student in an academic year, the complete tuition fees for that year must be fully paid.
  10. A student may interrupt his study not more than three years of absence. In such case he/she can reregister again in the class at which interruption has occurred. A student who has been absent for more than three years may be given an exceptional chance for re-registration pending University Board decision based on a proposal admitted by the Academic Committee on the student's petition.

  Department of Internal Medicine : It includes :

Gastroenterology, Respiratory diseases, Cardiology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Neurology and     Psychiatry, Rheumatology, Infectious Diseases.

  Department of Dermatology and Venereology

  Department of Clinical Pathology

  Department of Diagnostic Radiation, Radiotherapy and Physiotherapy.
