History of the Faculty
The Faculty of Medicine was established in 1995. It started with 30 students. This number has since increased reaching up to 60 students in recent years. The first Bachelor Degree in Medicine and Surgery was awarded in 2001.
In 2004, specialized and postgraduate studies were launched in the following branches: Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Neurology and Psychology.
The Credit hours system was applied also in 2005 across the entire faculty thus offering students flexibility and simplicity in course selection and schedules.
Furthermore, in 2006 more specialized and postgraduate programs were added to the curriculum including Obstetrics & Gynecology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Gastroenterology, and Anesthesia.
The standard duration of study for the Bachelor Degree in Medicine and
Surgery (MBBCh) is 12 semesters and the degree requirements consist of 215
Credit Hours.
It is a requirement for residency and postgraduate studies registration, that
all Lebanese students must successfully complete 12 months of hospital rotations
as an internship at the affiliated hospitals.
The Bachelor Degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBCh) program is divided into 3
phases with specific objectives that ensure basic sciences knowledge and
clinical competence:
Semesters 1 to 4 are dedicated to the study of four
basic medical science courses as an introduction to the science and practice of
medicine emphasizing normal structure and function.
Semesters 5 & 6 introduce the student to the basic
concepts of abnormal human biology as well as diseases. They also include some
clinical applications that provide some integration of disease and conditions
related to the subjects taught. These semesters are pre-requisites for the next
six semesters, except for the two courses: COMM 307 & MEDC 308.
Semesters 7 to 12 are dedicated to clinical
learning, emphasizing the core clerkships. By the end of this phase, the student
will be able to critically evaluate patient problems with relevant and
appropriate history and examination and show logical reasoning and
decision-making on options for management of common conditions.
To be accepted for an undergraduate degree, applicants must:
• hold the official Lebanese Secondary School Certificate in a branch relevant
to the chosen undergraduate field of specialization, or an official equivalent;
• pass an admission examination in: English Language – Biology – Physics &
Chemistry.
The Faculty of Medicine offers Diplomas, Master and MD Degrees in the
following specializations:
Diplomas
The duration of study for a Diploma Degree is 3 semesters (minimum) and the
credit hour requirements for all Diploma specializations consist of 30 Credit
Hours.
Master and MD Degrees
The duration of study for the Master Degree in both the Clinical Specialization
and Basic Medical Sciences is 4 semesters (minimum) and the credit hour
requirements for all Master specializations consist of 46 Credit Hours.
The Master Degree program involves attending lectures, clinical rounds/training,
attending operating room, scientific activities, practical studies, and thesis.
Clinical Specializations, however, requires completing one year (minimum) of
hospital residency in the proposed field of specialization.
The duration of study for the MD Degree is 6 semesters (minimum) and the credit
hour requirements for all specializations consist of 54 Credit Hours.
The MD program consists of lectures, workshops, practical classes and clinical
training, application & field training, hospital rounds, conferences, self
education programs, etc.
1. Applicants for any of the postgraduate diplomas must hold a Bachelor
Degree obtained from BAU or any other recognized university.
2. Applicants for the Master Degree must hold a Bachelor Degree obtained from
Beirut Arab University or any recognized university with a minimum CGPA grade of
“C”; or a Specialized Graduate Diploma with a minimum CGPA grade of “C” or its
equivalent.
3. Applicants for the PhD Degree must hold a Master degree from Beirut Arab
University or any other recognized university that qualifies him/her to pursue
their PhD.
Master & PhD students should pass the TOEFL exam with at least an average of
500, or IELTS, or its equivalent in other languages before registering for the
thesis.
