Catalog Description

An introduction to parasitism, selected specimens of some medically important parasites, with emphasis on: classification, morphology, life cycle, physiology and pathogenicity. Practical: studying selected specimens of some parasites.

Course Objectives

This course is aimed to provide the students with an introduction to the field of medical parasitology. It focuses on the parasitological terms, types of parasites, habitats, hosts and different life cycles. It also includes the sources of infection, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, methods of diagnosis, prevention and control. The classification of different parasites is also included.

Knowledge and understanding:


At the end of this course the students will be able to:

    K1. Identify the different types of parasites

    K2. Classify each parasite

    K3. Describe the structure of each parasite

    K4. Explain the parasites’ life cycles

    K5. Discuss the relationship between each parasite and its host

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

    I1. Compare the information from a variety of sources relevant to parasitology

    I2. Assess the reasons of infection with parasites

    I3. Investigate the different ways by which the parasites damage their hosts and the response of the host.

    P1. Conduct procedures related to isolation and identification of some parasites

    P2. Report the best identification method for parasites causing some diseases

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

       S1. Communicate with patients and their families to avoid further exposure to parasites

       S2. Functioning in multi-disciplinary teams to advise the population on scientific basis to prevent infections with parasites

       S3. Deal with scientific material in English.
