The Faculty of Architecture-Design and Built Environment at Beirut Arab University issued the recommendations of its first International Conference, "Urban Health and Wellbeing 2018- Building Collaborative Intelligence for a Better Lives in Cities" that aimed at linking scientific research with community issues.
The conference, which succeeded in attracting a large and distinguished group of international and local experts and specialists in various fields on urban health, resulted in the need for scientific cooperation and interaction among researchers in various scientific disciplines by encouraging and training researchers on scientific cooperation through research and applied scientific projects that addressed the needs of local communities and strategic development priorities at the national and regional levels.
The conference also recommended that the efforts of the university in the past two years exerted in supporting the urban health fields be crowned by adopting an urban health laboratory (or public health) to serve as a basis for cooperation between specialists and researchers on the one hand and the local community on the other.
This initiative aimed to address the societal challenges in urban areas in particular through methodologies that establish practical and successful solutions to these challenges. The conference also stressed the importance of dealing with cities as a complex system that helps to comprehensively understand the economic, environmental, urban and social interactions in the city as a guarantee for the effectiveness of proposed solutions and for setting priorities for the required treatment and development.
The conference also emphasized the importance of promoting scientific cooperation and mutual interaction through the creation of scientific research networks and academic cooperation in the field of urban health with national universities, scientific forums and institutions concerned with urban development at the local, regional and international levels.
The conference assured that Beirut Arab University shall play a leading role in promoting and spreading academic and community awareness in the field of urban health through its continual interaction with scientific research networks and international institutions in the areas of urban health and urban development. The university’s role in this area includes raising the capacity of researchers, decision-makers and development partners in general, identifying development priorities in urban public health issues, as well as encouraging and adopting development models and projects that can be replicated and utilized.
