On the occasion of the World Antibiotic Awareness Week, the Rafik Hariri Hospital (RHUH) organized an Antibiotic Awareness campaign on Wednesday February 13th, in partnership with the International Committee of Red Cross, in the primary health care center of the hospital. This raising campaign aimed to increase awareness of antibiotic resistance and to encourage best practices among the general public, health workers and policy makers to avoid the further emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance. The BAU pharmacy senior students, during their experiential placement, that were supervised by their preceptor Dr. Samar Karout, were remarkably efficient in volunteering to the raising campaign in promoting the role of pharmacists in preventing antibiotic resistance. The students simulated different case scenarios that are usually encountered in real life about the irrational use of antibiotics and the consequences of their misuse. Informative booths were installed in the primary health care centre of the hospital were the BAU students as well as the nursing students from the faculty of Public Health (Lebanese University) provided counselling tips about the following topics:

  • Appropriateness of antibiotic use
  • How to maintain the effectiveness of the antibiotic
  • Mechanism of action of bacterial resistance
  • Importance of taking the whole course of antibiotic
  • Antibiotics don’t treat viral infection like common cold and flu
