Professional Information
Overall Aims of Course
This course provides the scientific fundamentals of the current understanding of nutrition. The course discusses the needs and the characteristics of the major nutrients-carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water and describes their dietary roles. Furthermore, it addresses the topics of energy balance and the evaluation of nutritional status.  Emphasis is placed on the multiple factors that influence food intake. The role and function of nutrients in health promotion and wellness throughout the life cycle are also included. The concept of health and nutrition and the role of diet in the development of chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, etc. are emphasized as well.
