Law Program

History

The Faculty of Law was established in 1960 as one of the earliest faculties at BAU. Since then, this faculty has strived for excellence and provided Lebanon and the Middle East with quality Law graduates The faculty actively pursues the developments in the legal profession and revises its programs accordingly. Realizing the need for legal specialization, the faculty introduced two Master’s in 1993; one in Private Law and the other in Public Law. Then in 1998, for the benefit of all the Political Science graduates in Lebanon and the region, the Diploma of International and Diplomatic Relations was added to its postgraduate programs. Furthermore, in 2005, the faculty council expanded its academic forte and launched the Department of Political Science to complement the already offered Diploma in the field. In 2006, the faculty added three more postgraduate Diplomas in the fields of Political Science, Administrative & Financial Science, and International Trade. These diplomas were launched because of Globalization as well as local changes to taxation laws introduced by the Lebanese Ministry of Finance (MoF). Moreover, the faculty took this initiative in order to address concerns raised by the MoF about Lebanese Law graduates, in general, lacking taxation laws skills. In 2007, the faculty adopted the Credit hours system across all its programs.

Vision

Preserving its Arab identity, the Faculty of Law and Political Science aims at having a distinguished status among the other faculties worldwide, and at being one of the most significant legal and political resources of knowledge and education that contribute to the upbringing of generations capable of developing the legal intellect.

Mission

Based on its pioneering role for which it was founded in 1960, the Faculty of Law and Political Science is committed to the continuous upgrading of the teaching-learning process and to creating a distinguished environment for teaching, learning and legal research in accordance with the internationally accredited academic curricula which are implemented by an elite set of experts in the different political and legal domains. This will contribute to the formation of the legal Arab intellect and to the preparation of well-trained, qualified & scientific cadres to manage the political and legal practices, to strongly compete in acting at the local, regional and international levels, to be able to live up to the latest in science and technology, and to participate in serving the community via satisfying its needs, offering just resolutions to its problems and enhancing the national values in order to achieve comprehensive development.

Objectives

  • Offer specialized academic programs that meet the most recent developments in the legal and political studies and are committed to the international rules of quality and accreditation.
  • Prepare qualified graduates capable of competition on the job market at the local, regional and international levels.
  • Strengthen and develop scientific research in the fields of law and politics that serves the local needs and contributes in preserving the graduates' Arab cultural identity thus enforcing the values of patriotism and citizenship in them.
  • Serve the Lebanese and the Arab communities, communicate with the legal and judicial institutions and spread the culture of justice, equality, human rights and public freedom.

Academic Program

The Faculty of Law & Political Science offers a Bachelor Degree in Law where the standard program of study is 8 semesters.

Admission Requirements

To be accepted for an undergraduate degree, applicants must:

  • Hold the Lebanese Secondary Certificate in a branch relevant to the chosen undergraduate field of specialization, or an official equivalent.
  • Successfully pass an Entrance Exam to measure the level of proficiency in general knowledge in Arabic Language.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the program, graduates should be able to :

  • Recognize the basics of Civil Law and Civil Procedural Law with all related topics.
  • Distinguish basic aspects of Islamic Law.
  • Describe, evaluate and analyze concepts of Penal and Criminal law.
  • Recognize Public Law with all its domains: Constitutional law, Administrative Law , Administrative Judicature.
  • Have a general ideas of trade acts, traders and Intellectualproperty , trade companies ,commercial contracts , maritime and air law and law of transport.
  • Demonstrate general knowledge in International Public Law: International Organization , International Economic Law, International Humanitarian Law.
  • Recognize the basics of Private International Law includingPrivate Law , International Trade, Citizenship and Foreigners Status, Arbitration.
  • Recognize the history of social and legal institutions , the Philosophy of Law and acquire practical aspects of legal methodology.
  • Recognize the principles of Political Economy , Public Finance , Money and Banking and International Economy from a legal point of view.
  • Comment on and appraise legal decisions.
  • Develop legal thinking compatible with technological and scientific updates.
  • Conduct a comparative analysis to provide solutions to the communities’ issues and problems.
  • Face legal and political challenges in the globalization era.
  • Recognize the basics of public policies , International and Diplomatic Relations, political and contemporaneous issues, methods of Political Science and Political Geography.
