The Department of French Language and Literature at the Faculty of Human Sciences, Beirut Arab University, participated in the international competition of Liste Goncourt de Choix de l’Orient 2017. The event was held at the Biel, as part of the Francophone Book Fair. Attended by Mr. Eric-Emmanuel Schmit, representing the Goncour Academy, and Mr. Herve Sabouring, the Regional Director of the Agence Universitaire de da Francophonie. the competition aims at selecting the best francophone book for the year. The jury consisted of 39 students from the 33 universities of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie, in 12 Middle Eastern countries: Djibouti, Egypt, UAE, Ethiopia, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
For over a month, the students read and analysed the books chosen by the Goncourt Academy, to be able to vote for the best book. The jury then chose Karim Zakour, a student at Beirut Arab University, as their spokesperson, to announce the winning title, the novel Bakhita by Veronique Olmi.
