The Medical Laboratory Technology department from the Faculty of Health Sciences at Beirut Arab University hosted a two-day ISO/IEC 17025: 2017 workshop on 7th & 8th of February 2018 entitled “General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories', under the USAID funded program implemented by Land O'Lakes International Development and in collaboration with the Lebanese Agricultural Research Institute (LARI). The two-day workshop was organized by Dr. Fatima Saleh from the Medical laboratory Technology Department and delivered by the US expert Dr. Bill Hirt, director of Accreditation and Global Technical Advisor, ANAB. ISO/IEC 17025 is a quality management system and the main standard for testing and calibration laboratories. It shares many commonalities with ISO 9000 but adds the concept of competence to the equation. ISO 17025 accreditation proves a laboratory has met the quality management requirements of ISO 17025, and it has the ability and competence to produce testing and calibration results. Approximately 25 people attended the workshop representing the Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of dentistry from BAU, BAU alumni, laboratory personnel from LARI, Lebanese university, LIVCD program and Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture. On the first day of the workshop, the participants were introduced to the Laboratory Management Systems based on the principles of ISO 17025, the steps required to implementing ISO 17025:2017 and the key changes compared to ISO 17025: 2005. On the next day, Dr. Bill Hirt discussed the different types of uncertainties, uncertainty measurements, validation of test methods and proficiency testing. At the end of the workshop, certificates of participation were awarded to the attendees.
