Course Description

The course aims to introduce students to the main concepts that inform sociolinguistics as a sub-discipline. Students learn about the relation between language use and various social, cultural, political and/or geographical factors that affect language choice/usage. Thus students learn about speech communities, language varieties, and different socio-lingual phenomena, while understanding how social class, education, age and gender, for example, are decisive aspects in language use.
