Course Description

This course introduces students to the study of semantics followed by the study of discourse analysis. Students learn about the main principles and concepts informing semantic analysis. Topics include the lexicon, types of meaning, semantic features, lexical relations, semantic fields, and others. The discourse analysis component familiarizes students with various approaches adopted in the analysis of larger chunks of texts, conversations, etc. Discoursal aspects, such as cohesion, coherence, context, implicatures, etc, are examined.
