Course Description

The course aims to introduce students to the rise of the English Novel as a genre in the 18th century through a survey of the political, socio-cultural and economic conditions that gave rise to it. Students, then, are introduced to the main features of the 18th century novel as seen in the works of Jonathan Swift, Daniel Defoe and Henry Fielding. The developments of the genre are traced into the Victorian age, focusing on the intellectual trends of the time. The defining features of the time are traced in representative works by novelists such as Jane Austen, Emily Bronte, George Eliot, Charles Dickens and Henry James.
