Course Description

  The course aims to familiarize students with the main social, cultural, economic and political developments in England, beginning with the 16th Century down to the 20th Century. The periods covered include the Renaissance, the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment, the Age of Reason, the Industrial revolution. Intellectual and cultural movements, socio-political developments (such as the Magna Carta and the rise of parliament), Tudor England, the Civil War, the Restoration, and other topics are studied. The development of Democracy, the struggle between King and Parliament, the Civil War, the Glorious Revolution, and the establishment of constitutional monarchy, Political, intellectual, and social life in England in the 18th Century, The Industrial Revolution, The Enlightenment and Marxism, The French Revolution, World War I and World War II, The Bolshevik Revolution, The Great Depression in the thirties, The Spanish Civil War, The Cold War and the intellectual and literary movements in the 20th Century.
