Course Description

The course aims to provide students with a comprehensive survey of American Literature from the 17th century down to the 20th century. Students are introduced to major authors who defined the emergence of American Literature, such as Benjamin Franklin, Cooper, Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne etc. The course also familiarizes students with the different characteristic features of the various trends and the development of American Literature to the 20th century. Thus students learn about poets such as Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Ezra Pound, and T.S. Eliot, as well as major influential novelists such as Mark Twain, Henry James, Ernest Hemingway and Scott Fitzgerald. Students are also briefly introduced to American theatre.
