COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to introduce the basic concepts of Health Psychology. Topics covered will include depression and illness, traumatic injuries, cancer, and chronic pain. Also covered will be the use of psychological techniques to improve behaviors for wellness including smoking cessation, proper nutrition, and exercise. Such methods of treatment will include biofeedback, relaxation and behavioral goal setting. This course continues with the study of the fundamental processes underlying human behavior such as Learning, Motivation, Emotion, Intelligence, Personality and Altered States of Consciousness.

COURSE AIM
This course will apply a scientific and research perspective to the study of health promoting and health damaging behaviors. Using a biopsychosocial approach, behavioral patterns that result in cardiovascular disease, cancer, alcoholism, sexually transmitted diseases and other conditions will be explored. Course content will focus on stress and the immune system, stress management techniques, the health care system, risk taking, culture-bound syndromes, diversity issues, social support, and the role of the patient.
